This August, The Michelson 20MM Foundation and The Center for Intellectual Property Understanding (CIPU) announced that they are becoming partners to increase positive awareness of intellectual property (IP) rights. Together, both organizations will provide education and information to students and other audiences.
“CIPU is leading the way in promoting the importance of IP awareness and identifying ways of working together with businesses, organizations and universities to highlight how intellectual property impacts people,” said Phil Kim, President of the Michelson 20MM Foundation.
The partnership will include support for the first IP Awareness Summit, being held on November 6 in Chicago. CIPU will be hosting the event in collaboration with Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology.
The partnership also includes support for the course, “The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Intellectual Property,” which is currently taught at the University of Southern California. Unlike other IP courses, this is open to all undergraduate students.
The course features a list of esteemed guest speakers. Including a former chief judge of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit as well as leading IP counsel from Intel, Nike, and Medtronic.
During the first lecture, introductory remarks were made by Marshall Phelps, CIPU Vice-Chairman and former VP of IP Strategy and Business at Microsoft and IBM. Below, you can watch a quick excerpt from the first class as Marshall Phelps explains why intellectual property is imperative in today’s economy:
“Twenty years ago, economists would tell you that the value of a corporation is 80% physical assets, 20% intellectual assets … Today, economists would tell you that those numbers have flipped and 80% of the value is in intellectual property,” said Marshall Phelps.
The Influence of CIPU
