The Michelson 20MM Foundation is proud to join industry partners such as Snap, Inc., Boingo Wireless, and mitú! As a result of this collaboration, more technology internships, hands-on experience and youth training are available for low-income students.

“We have an opportunity to lead by example,” explained Dr. Gary K. Michelson, founder of the Michelson 20MM Foundation. “Internships form a crucial component of early career development, and it’s programs like this that will help usher in the next generation of educated talent.”

L.A.’s Tech Talent Pipeline Program

Los Angeles Mayor, Eric Garcetti, set a goal of hiring 20,000 young people in Los Angeles by 2020. In order to meet this goal, it will require a growing network of partners committed to expanding talent development opportunities.

As a result, the L.A.Tech Talent Pipeline program is established by the Mayor and the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce Bixel Exchange to expand tech youth training and career exploration opportunities for L.A. youth.  The partnership aims to address workforce demand in the rapidly growing tech region of Silicon Beach by placing 100 students in summer internships starting this year.

By plugging into the network of public and private partners, Michelson 20MM will directly support this pipeline by providing up to internships in 2017. Consequently, we can continue to bridge the gap between higher education and the next generation workforce.

Declining Employment Among Able Young Adults And How Youth Training Will Help

HIRE-LA’s Youth

In the past 12 years, summer youth employment has declined 40% across the United States. Without support from organized programs like HIRE LA’s Youth, resources for job training and placement for young adults are increasingly scarce.

Therefore, it’s vital that the shortage of skilled tech workers throughout the city and county be addressed. Due to L.A.’s talent pipeline, they will provide pathways for employment that will provide more youth with 21st century jobs. As a result, less youth will no longer go unemployed.
