Osmosis, a Michelson 20MM portfolio company, recently became a part of Elsevier, the world’s largest scientific publishing company.
Osmosis offers more than 2,000 videos designed to distill some of the most complex medical concepts and procedures into accessible content for millions of learners. By partnering with over 140 institutions and more than 100 medical experts, Osmosis has made medical education more accessible at a time when the nation desperately needs clinicians and caregivers.
In 2018, Michelson 20MM Foundation, invested in the startup to support and expand its commitment to making medical education more accessible for all. Their vision, “everyone who cares for someone will learn by Osmosis,” is supported by the evidence-based videos that are available via any device with an internet connection.
Michelson 20MM impact investments create opportunities and help develop the necessary skills for innovators to bridge the gap between talent and success in the knowledge economy, pet care, environmental sustainability, financial inclusion and social justice fields. Michelson portfolio startups have raised follow-on capital more than 32 times Michelson’s early investments, and include three exits over the past year.
“By joining Elsevier, Osmosis will continue to catalyze change at scale, which is what we hope every Michelson Impact Venture will be able to achieve,” said Phillip Kim, managing director of Michelson Impact Ventures and CEO of Michelson 20MM. “We are looking forward to seeing Osmosis reach millions of additional students.”
Whether learners are seeking to master the integumentary system, defibrillate a patient, or manage a traumatic brain injury, Osmosis can provide a video tutorial.
“The first health education materials I used in medical school were the iconic Elsevier resources, Gray’s Anatomy and Netter’s,” said Shiv Gaglani, co-founder and CEO of Osmosis. “We are excited about this next chapter working with the Elsevier team to empower tens of millions of current and future healthcare professionals and their patients around the world.”
In the coming years, Osmosis will continue to promote health literacy among medical doctors, doctors of optometry, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and their patients.
“Osmosis’s Big Hairy Audacious Goal is to educate a billion people around the world by 2025, and we’re confident that by joining Elsevier’s 8,100+ strong team across 50+ global offices, we’ll be able to more effectively ‘Raise the Line’ by adding to health workforce capacity and quality and ‘Flatten the Curve’ by improving health literacy among patients and the general public,” Gaglani said.
