Student Basic Needs

Eliminating basic needs challenges as a barrier to student success.

OUR APPROACH

We support student success by demystifying the real cost of college and addressing ever-increasing non-tuition costs that place our most vulnerable students in positions of food insecurity, housing insecurity, and overall financial instability.

The Problem

3.8 million college students nationwide experience insecurity.

Nearly 60% of potentially eligible students were not receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

Nearly 3 out of 5 California Community college students are housing insecure.

Over 40% of California postsecondary students experience food insecurity.

Focal Points

Promoting More Equitable Systems of Student Support Services

By improving the efficiency and efficacy of student support services in areas of food, housing, and beyond, we strive to create environments across California campuses where our most vulnerable students can better focus on achieving their academic goals.

Enhancing Systems to Help Pregnant and Parenting Students

Recognizing the unique challenges faced by pregnant and parenting students (who are disproportionately first generation and students of color), we aim to address the challenges encountered by this often unseen student population by creating better-informed and more targeted student supports and services.

Supporting Innovative Financial Assistance Models

We work to surface and uplift innovative, research-based financial assistance models—in areas including emergency student aid and guaranteed income—with the potential to further optimize the impact of public funding on student retention and success.

Pregnant and Parenting Student Initiative

The Michelson Pregnant and Parenting Student Initiative is a platform for programmatic and policy efforts designed to increase support for pregnant and parenting students at colleges and universities in California. We aim to address the academic challenges encountered by this often unseen student population.
